Desperately Seeking Texture

We play with our hair a lot at Birchbox HQ. We do a lot of serious work, yes, but almost every day includes a mini break to test a cool topsy tail updo or try a pretty topknot. Sadly, my hair doesn’t have the kind of texture you need to get these styles. As Katia puts it, my hair is “too healthy.” I don’t know about that, but I do have soft, slippery strands that needs a little extra help. Here, my favorite texture-adding products:

1. Lazy post-gym fix: I want to spend as little time as possible in my gym locker room, which is why I usually just towel dry and dash out the door. On these mornings, I spray my damp hair with a generous amount of Davine’s Sea Salt Primer No. 14, which gives me a piecey—but not crunchy—effect.

2. Updo helper: When I want to try a braid or an updo at the office, I sidle over to Meredith’s desk and grab her Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray or Oribe Apres Beach Wave and Shine Spray. Both smell awesome and give my strands enough roughness to hold any style.

3. Everyday boost: I don’t usually blow dry my hair, but when I do I always douse it in Blow NY’s Blow Up Thickening Mist. It’s extremely lightweight and makes my usually lame hair look full and bouncy, even when I rough dry without a brush.

4. Faux dirty hair: Everyone at the office swears by dry shampoo to revive second day hair, but I like it for a different reason: it thickens up my normally flat strands to give them a more interesting look. Recently, I’ve been trying Ojon’s Full Detox Dry Cleansing Spray, which smells amazing, and Shu Uemura’s Volume Maker, which will launch in June and has s super cool powder brush applicator.
