Let’s Get Social! How To Start A Blog

In honor of our Social Media Week and our panel tomorrow, we’re blogging about some of our favorite social media sites, tips, and tricks. So far we’ve covered Pinterest, Instagram, and Mashable. Today we are going to tackle “the blog.” Starting a blog might seem intimidating but it’s actually very easy, and lots of fun.

Step 1: Choose a Platform
As you may have guessed, Tumblr is our platform of choice. We love it because it’s easy to create content and even easier to share it. Just go to, choose a name for your blog and you’re ready to go.

Step 2: What Will You Blog About?
Your blog should be about whatever is interesting to you! When we talk to Birchbox community members they frequently tell us they started blogging because it looked fun fun to share their beauty tips and tricks with others. You don’t have to think long and hard about your blog’s theme; just choose something that you want to talk about!

Step 3: Pictures and Video
Generally, posts with pictures get the most attention. If you are using Instagram, you can upload your Instagram snaps to your blog for quick and beautiful photos. If you are doing makeup tutorials on YouTube, you can embed those on your blog. Just click “share” beneath your video on YouTube and copy and paste that code into the HTML code on your blog.

Step 4: Connect With Your Social Media Profiles
The key to establishing a blogging presence is to enable people to find you wherever they are. Some people love Facebook but hate Twitter, while other people spend all their time on Pinterest. Be sure to put links to all of your social profiles on your blog. Most sites have tools for creating “follow me” buttons that you can easily add to your blog.

Step 5: Connecting With Other Bloggers
A great way to get visitors to your blog is to read and comment on other blogs. Tumblr makes this super easy. When you log in to Tumblr, you immediately see the latest posts form all the blogs you follow. You can ‘like’ a post, ‘reblog’ a post, or comment on a post. When you establish relationships with other bloggers, they are more likely to read and comment on your blog.
