Now that it’s officially frigid, it’s time to overhaul your skincare routine. All that back and forth between the chilly outdoors and overheated rooms can take a serious toll on your complexion—leading to dry, flaky, irritated skin. But if you follow the right routine, you can keep your skin healthy and moisturized even when the weather resembles Arctic tundra conditions. Recently, I had the chance to chat with celebrity dermatologist Rebecca Giles, the founder of FIX Malibu, and get her essential winter skincare advice. Click through to learn what she said!
You’ve mastered the art of layering scarves over sweaters, but did you know you should also layer skincare products in the winter to stay protected from the elements? Dr. Giles recommends layering water-based serums beneath thicker, oil-based products. “Serums should go directly onto clean skin after it has been washed. Follow immediately with moisturizer (no need to wait for the serum to be absorbed) while skin is still damp to bind moisture to the skin.”
Exfoliation Is Key
Avoid dull skin by sloughing off dead cells once or twice a week. Dr. Giles suggests that you find a cleanser with a mild concentration of salicylic acid, which will help clear your pores and gently exfoliate your skin.
Don’t Skip The Sunscreen
Just because your last beach vacation is a distant memory doesn’t mean you should toss the SPF. Harmful UV rays can cause premature wrinkles, and they’re present year-round. According to Dr. Giles, you should always wear a broad-spectrum sunblock with SPF 30 or higher. One warning: “Be careful with moisturizers that contain sunscreen. They are almost always chemical sunscreens, and their sun protection lasts only a couple of hours.” While there’s no need to set aside your favorite tinted moisturizer, we suggest that you layer a mineral sunblock underneath your makeup.
