We’re less than a week away from New Year’s Eve, which means you better start stocking up on noisemakers and kitschy party hats now. Whether you’re spending the night at home with your besties or going to a glitzy bash, you’ll want to look even more gorgeous than usual. (After all, if New Year’s Eve is good for anything, it’s photo ops!) This week, we’re helping you out with five days of party essentials. Our focus today: getting glowy with the help of highlighter.
As much as I love my mighty powerful lip colors and intense smoky liners, there is one thing I would give them all up for: flawless supermodel skin. Since I wasn’t born with that je ne sais quois glow, I routinely fake it with highlighter.
If you haven’t given highlighter a go before, you are seriously missing out. These shimmery products are specifically created to give you a radiant complexion. (And who doesn’t want to look radiant?) I always use highlighter on my brow bones and tops of my cheekbones to give me that spotlight effect, but having recently re-watched makeup artist Nam Vo’s tutorial on dewy skin, I am going to start applying some down the center of my nose, too.
Since all highlighters have different finishes, I use them in different ways. Here are three of my faves and when I call upon them.
High Shine: If you want super-wattage, don’t mess around: bust out Benefit’s High Beam. The creamy formula blends right in and the soft pink hue flatters all skin tones.
Warm Glow: NARS’ The Multiple in South Beach is a spectacular shimmer stick that is great to use all over the face (eyes, lips, everywhere!). I am especially keen on layering it over my bronzer for a superbly healthy looking gleam.
Naturally Luminescent: For daytime, I rely on my RMS Living Luminizer. A couple dabs of barely there pearlescence is all I need to make my skin look instantly refreshed. But what’s really nice about this product is that it’s layerable. If I’m headed to a party, I can just add more for a bigger glowy payoff.
Another fave find? Benefit’s semi-new Watt’s Up highlighter.
