Ingredient Decoder: Argan Oil

Most girls identify their hair as straight, curly, thick, or thin, but I can only think of one word to describe my hair: hard. I was born with abundant black locks that feel like strands of al dente spaghetti to the touch. Even gallons of conditioner can only soften it so much — by day two, it’s back to its original resistant state. But I’ve finally found something that can tame my mane: Redken’s All Soft Argan-6 Oil. I’ve been rubbing it into my hair post-shower every night, and it makes my hair remarkably soft and pliable. The secret is right on the label: a high concentration of fair trade argan oil.

Over the past few years, argan oil has skyrocketed to fame, and for good reason. The stuff really works. Sourced from the nuts of Morocco’s native argan trees, the oil has been used in cosmetics since ancient times. Berber women traditionally sit on the ground and crack the nuts with stones to extract the kernels, which are then roasted for their oils. It takes a whole season of nuts from a single tree to make one liter of the precious ingredient. Just in case you’re wondering, argan oil has a high concentration of vitamin E, omega acids, and antioxidants to strengthen hair and improve its elasticity. While I’m currently in love with the Redken, I can’t wait to try some of the other great products out there:

  • Josie Maran makes a range of argan-infused products, from bronzing oil to hair serum.
  • Orofluido Elixir has a triple whammy of argan, linseed, and Cyperus oils to boost hair’s manageability.
  • Amika Obliphica Hair Treatment is made with a blend of argan and obliphica oils to soften and smooth your cuticles.
