It’s every beauty lover’s worst nightmare: you go to the department store to repurchase your favorite product, only to find out it’s been discontinued. Cue the tears, the irrational anger at the salesperson who broke the news, and the conviction that the whole world has turned against you. For me, this happened when I ran out of my favorite MAC eyeshadow, an opalescent peachy-pink shade that flattered the golden undertones of my skin. For Kathy Lee Gifford, a similar tragedy struck when she tried to hunt down Chanel’s uber-limited edition Khaki Rose nail polish, part of a trio made for Fashion’s Night Out last year. The Chanel polishes sold like hotcakes until the company ran out of supplies and pulled the plug. Gifford was crushed (I know the feeling). The peppy daytime talk show host and I have both been victims of the discontinued phenomenon.
Luckily, there’s a company called Giella that will match the shade of your favorite discontinued nail polish or lip product. All you have to do is send them your old lipstick tube, gloss container, pencil, or bottle of polish, and they’ll custom blend a product that’s the same color as your original. That’s how Gifford got her polish fix with a Chanel-esque bottle Giella dubbed Happy Hour. I’m sad to say they don’t match eyeshadows (yet), but I’m tempted to start a one-woman campaign for them to remake my favorite MAC shade. Hey, a girl can dream.
