We’re suckers for a bright red pout, but this week’s guest blogger, Julianne Carell, is even more addicted to bold lips than we are. In fact, her blog, PeaceLoveLipstick.com, is an ongoing ode to her favorite makeup category, covering everything from news to helpful application tips. This week, the lipstick-lover is showcasing her obsession on our site — check back each day for a new dose of lip color inspiration!
If you ever wear lipstick, you should own a lip brush. The reason being that a lip brush will give you a neater, more precise application of color. Here’s how to achieve the perfect editorial-worthy lip using a brush:
Step 1: Start with clean, exfoliated, moisturized lips. I like to use a face-cleansing wipe to make sure I have nothing else on first and then I slick on a balm a few minutes before applying.
Step 2: After picking up color with the brush, lightly outline the very edges of your lips. Once you’re finished lining, then go back in and fill in the rest. The best part about applying lipstick with a brush is that you can control how much and exactly where the color goes on. Want the illusion of a bigger lip? Try this trick: line just outside your natural lip line.
Step 3: Make your color application look even more precise by blending in some concealer just outside of your lip line. This also creates a barrier that prevents color bleeding and allows you to redefine the shape of your lip, if needed.
Product Tip: The Stila #6 Lip Brush ($24) has a shorter head and tapered bristles are ideal for precise, simple lipstick application. It also has a portable, protective cover, which is great for tossing in your makeup bag.
