Basquiat Goes to Hawaii: Timo Weiland Spring 2012
Designers Timo Weiland and Alan Eckstein may have sent feminine prints and floaty chiffon down the runway during their first Lincoln Center show last night but backstage, Ouidad hairstylists and NARS makeup artists were channeling tomboys.

Taking Weiland and Eckstein’s inspiration — the artist Basquiat goes on vacation to Hawaii — as direction, Ouidad created hairstyles that were natural, soft, and a bit of a departure from her signature curls. Stylists used small amounts of Climate Control Heat & Humidity Gel, Tress Effects Styling Gel, and PlayCurl Volumizing Mousse on models before pulling hair into loose, low ponytails and twisting under. Some were finished with oversize, backwards baseball caps while others were twisted into more polished twists.

We also caught up with James Boehmer, Director of Global Artistry for NARS, who was responsible for the makeup backstage. The look was similarly vacation—inspired, but with a retro 70s twist. On skin, they used NARS’s new Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer (out this spring) and Pressed Powder in Beach for a matte, warm look and kept the eyes neutral. The emphasis was on the bright, flushed cheeks, a nod to legendary 70s French photographer Guy Bourdain. The makeup artists used a mixture of Dolce Vita and Exhibit A Blush to get the exaggerated flush. Finally, they finished the look with beige shimmer eyeshadow down the bridge of the models’ noses and a touch of rose Vaseline down the nose and on the bow of their lips to mimic perspiration.
