Monoi Oil is really having a moment. It’s popping up in all of our favorite products and is generating some major buzz. But does it live up to the hype? We’re firmly on the pro-Monoi side of the fence and think you will be too once you’ve heard a little bit more about it. Here are three things you might not have previously known about Monoi Oil:
- Monoi is actually a combination of coconut oil from Coprah Coconuts and Tiare Gardenias, both of which are only grown in Tahiti. For every liter of coconut oil, at least 15 Tiare flowers must be used. The flowers are soaked in the coconut oil for a minimum of 15 days to infuse the mixture.
- Since 1992, an Appellation of Origin has protected Monoi Oil, meaning it’s only manufactured in Tahiti and manufacturers must follow strict regulations that pertain to every phase of the process, from exactly when the Tiare flowers are picked to how the oil is shipped and stored.
- The same recipe for Monoi Oil has been used for over 2,000 years and passed down through the generations by natural healers in Tahiti known as Mamas. We have to respect anything that’s been around for that long!
